In the early 1990s the chain, long associated with Colonel Harland Sanders, continued shifting its public name from “Kentucky Fried Chicken” to the shorter KFC to modernize the brand and avoid the negative connotation of “fried.” The company was owned by PepsiCo until 1997, when PepsiCo spun off its restaurant division into Tricon Global Restaurants (later renamed Yum! Brands in 2002), which also operated Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. During this period KFC introduced menu experiments like popcorn chicken, crispy strips, and value meals while redesigning many stores with brighter, more contemporary interiors. The brand also accelerated international growth, especially in Asia—most notably China—where KFC became one of the dominant Western fast-food chains.
