As one of the largest independent phone companies outside the Bell System, Centel expanded rapidly into wireless communications during the 1980s, building valuable cellular assets. In 1988, Centel merged with Sprint, a move that strengthened Sprint’s local and wireless footprint, after which the Centel name was retired and its operations were absorbed into Sprint, with its legacy ultimately becoming part of today’s T-Mobile US.
